Pine stool by Olof Ottelin, Finland 1960
Interesting stool in pine by Finnish designer Olof Ottelin (1917-1971), 1960.
Olof Ottelin studied to be a furniture designer in the shadow of the Second World War and graduated as an interior architect in 1946. He started his work in Stockmann's drawing office a couple of years later.
The thirty-year-old designer had already demonstrated his skills as a furniture designer before that. He had won several design contests, which were diligently organized in post-war Finland, and his furniture was produced by, among others, Sopenkorve and Mobilia.
A place in Stockmann's drawing office undoubtedly felt like a stroke of luck for the young designer, because there were only a few permanent jobs for furniture designers in Finland at that time.
Ottelin started out as a furniture draftsman, but after a couple of years he progressed to the head of the furniture department and five years later to the artistic director of the interior design department.
From 1959, he also served as the chief designer of Stockmann's subsidiary and its furniture manufacturer Kerava Puusepäntehdas.
Stockmann became Olof Ottelin's life's work. He worked for the department store for twenty years until his death in 1971.
