Severin Hansen (1901 - 1990)
Severin Hansen Jr. was a Danish furniture designer and craftsman whose work has become synonymous with the quiet sophistication of Scandinavian modernism. Best known for his collaboration with Haslev Møbelfabrik, Hansen created furniture that reflects a deep respect for materials, precision and functional clarity. His designs are distinguished by their clean geometric lines, slender proportions and impeccable joinery, particularly the seamless, angular mitred joints that have become a defining hallmark of his style.
Working primarily in teak and rosewood, Hansen produced coffee tables, nesting tables, desks, small cabinets and lighting that embody the essence of Danish mid-century design. His pieces combine a sculptural delicacy with structural integrity, demonstrating an elegant balance between beauty and utility. While his aesthetic is restrained, it is never austere. The natural warmth of the woods, combined with simple forms and flawless craftsmanship, gives his furniture a timeless appeal that continues to resonate with collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
Although Severin Hansen remained relatively low-profile during his career, his work has earned increasing recognition for its refinement and architectural clarity. Today his designs are celebrated as enduring examples of Danish modern furniture, admired for their careful construction, material honesty and subtle sophistication.
